Mekong River Commission - Climate Change Adaptation

As global and local concerns about climate change grow, the Mekong River Commission continues its work to better understand how people in the basin can adapt to it. Adaptation initiatives are underway throughout the basin as part of regional and national projects. Most adaptation strategies focus on water resource managementagriculture, and natural disaster management.

UK Met Office - UK Climate Change Projection

UKCP09 is the name given to the UK Climate Projections. The UKCP09 website allow users to access information on plausible changes in 21st century climate for the United Kingdom. UKCP09 provides future climate projections for land and marine regions as well as observed (past) climate data for the UK.

UKCP09 was produced in 2009, funded by a number of agencies led by Defra. It is based on sophisticated scientific methods provided by the Met Office, with input from over 30 contributing organisations. UKCP09 can be used to help organisations assess potential impacts of the projected future climate and to explore adaptation options to address those impacts.  The UKCP09 website is managed by the Environment Agency working with the Met Office.

Cooperative Programme on Water and Climate
The Co-operative Programme on Water and Climate aims to improve the capacity in water resources management to cope with the impacts of increasing variability of the world's climate, by establishing a platform through which policymakers and water resources managers have better access to, and make better use of, information generated by climatologists and meteorologists. This site offers access to two useful planning models, STREAM (a water resource planning model incorporating climate change scenarios), and SPLASH, a PC game for integrated water resource planning.

FAO Climate Information Tool

This section provides an interactive tool to query a spatial data-set containing mean monthly climate data. The data-set covers the global land surface at a 10 minute spatial resolution for the period 1961-1990. The tool displays the latitude, longitude and elevation of the chosen location, and the following climate variables per month:

GCOS - Global Climate Observing System
The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) was established in 1992 to ensure that the observations and information needed to address climate-related issues are obtained and made available to all potential users. It is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Council for Science (ICSU). GCOS is intended to be a long-term, user-driven operational system capable of providing the comprehensive observations required for monitoring the climate systemand for detecting and attributing climate change.

GEO - Group on Earth Observations
The Group on Earth Observations, GEO, was established by a series of three ministerial-level summits. GEO includes 66 member countries, the European Commission, and 46 participating organizations working together to establish a Global Earth Observation System of Systems. The GEO vision for GEOSS is to realize a future wherein decisions and actions for the benefit of humankind are informed via coordinated, comprehensive and sustained Earth observations and information.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC)
In 1992, countries joined an international treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to cooperatively consider what they could do to limit average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change, and to cope with whatever impacts were, by then, inevitable. This site provides a vast resource of climate change protocols, activities, data and resources.

CCRA: the UK's first Climate Change Risk Assessment
Under the Climate Change Act 2008 there is requirement for the UK Government to carry out an assessment of the risks to the UK of the current and predicted impacts of climate change to the year 2100. HR Wallingford led a large team of experts covering science, economics, stakeholder engagement and communications to produce the assessment. As this was the first assessment to be undertaken under the Act, a major aspect of the project was to develop a method and seek wide-spread agreement on the risks that needed to be considered.

Climate Change Prediction
Climateprediction.net is the largest experiment to try and produce a forecast of the climate in the 21st century. To do this, we need people around the world to give us time on their computers - time when they have their computers switched on, but are not using them to their full capacity. Climate change, and our response to it, are issues of global importance, affecting food production, water resources, ecosystems, energy demand, insurance costs and much else. There is a broad scientific consensus that the Earth will probably warm over the coming century; climateprediction.net should, for the first time, tell us what is most likely to happen.

Comprehensive Overview of the Causes, Magnitude and Impacts of Climate Change
Comprehensive Overview of the Causes, Magnitude and Impacts of Climate Change We provide a comprehensive overview of the causes, magnitude and impacts of climate change. A lot of the relevant climate data are available on the internet but they are not presented in a way which makes them easy to understand. Where climate data are available in a digestible form they are often presented in a biased way. On this site you will find graphs, explanation and data related to essential aspects of climate change. Everything can be downloaded for free and the data files can be input directly to spreadsheets on Windows.

World Water & Climate Atlas
Produced and available on-line from IWMI. The World Water and Climate Atlas gives irrigation and agricultural planners rapid access to accurate data on climate and moisture availability for agriculture. The core of the Atlas is data assembled from weather stations around the world for the period 1961-1990. Data can be extracted in summary, manipulated using the Atlas software, or exported in a standardized format for use in other applications. Users can also include their own local data for a more detailed picture of a particular area.
